With a height of around 3500 feet above sea level, these hills are a must visit with any Mysore tour package. Well known religious shrine, Chamundeshwari Temple is located on these hills. Along with the temple, what attracts tourist here are the majestic statues of Mahishasura and Nandi.

Statue of Mahishasura, Chamundi Hills near Mysore

A colourfully painted statue of demon Mahishasura is one of the major attractions of Chamundi Hills. It has become a prominent part of every Mysore Tourism. This majestic statue of Mahishasura is shown holding a cobra in his left hand and a sword in his right hand. This statue is said to be built during the reign of Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar when the steps to the hills were also constructed.

According to the legend, Mahishasura was the king of Mysore. He was born to an Asura King and after rigorous tapas to Lord Brahma he was blessed with the boon that no one but a woman can kill him. The blessings had made him believe that he will never die as no one woman will have the power to kill him. However, with his increasing atrocities on people of his kingdom and to protect devas upon whom he has launched a war, Goddess Shakti took the form of Goddess Chamundeshwari/Goddess Durga, to put an end to his cruelties. Goddess Shakti is believed to be an embedment of cosmic energy, had then killed Mahishasura in a battle. This is the reason why Goddess is also known with the name of Mahishasura Mardini, which means the one who killed Mahishasura.

According to scholars Mahishasura was not an asura and a good ruler of Mysore, which has been a topic of debate and disagreement since many decades.

Statue of Nandi, Chamundi Hills near Mysore

Another statue at Chamundi Hills that attracts every visitor is the gigantic statue of Nandi, Lord Shiva’s bull and holy vehicle. This vast statue of Nandi has been carved out of a single rock. With a height of around 16 feet and width of 24 feet, this monolith is the third largest statue of Nandi in India while the largest statue of Nandi is located in Lepakshi in Andhra Pradesh. This statue is located on the 700th step of the holy Chamundi Hills. In front of the statue, there are basic arrangements for devotees to offer prayers such as pooja plate, etc. along with religious importance, its fine sculpting is worth admiring too.
